Frozen feeders?

ilm Jul 27, 2008 03:18 PM

I was just wondering how I could find a good place for frozen mice. I know several online places that sell them for low but the shipping prices are all $50 . Is there some easy way to get frozen mice locally? I'm not a huge fan of petco/petsmart but would they sell any? I'm kind of at a loss here, thanks for any info.

Petco sells them.
You may also be able to find someone local via craigs list to split the order with.

For about how much? Does anyone know?

I order from The Mouse Factory, www.themousefactory.com. Their shipping for my last order of 50 hopper mice and 25 fuzzy rats, was 32.50. Total cost per animal was less than $1.

Very high quality also.

I think I saw frozen pinky mice at Petco for about $1.50 each! The package was not vacuum sealed (think freezer burn), and it was not clear plastic (can't see the freezer burn if its there.) Sometime the smaller "Mom and Pop" stores sell live feeders of all sizes, but their supply is often very undependable. So I would go with the Mouse Factory. Very good customer service, quality, overnight shipping on dry ice (fun to play with!).

The price of frozen mice at chain stores will be far higher than geting them delivered via mail order, even with shipping costs added.
The best way to save money is if you have a reptile show in your area.
Frozen rodent vendors often attend these and you wouldn't have to pay shipping costs.

I buy mine at micedirect.com. They have the best prices I can find.

Big cheese factory

My quote was $68 for 200 frozen pinkies(AWESOME DEAL) but of course depends where you live. I live in CA and they are in Texas. Will be ordering from them very soon, heard they are also very high quality. Can't also go wrong with Mouse factory.

First of all I have found that PetSmart and Petco are VERY expensive and not vacuum packed. I have tried several national suppliers and find that Big Cheese delivers a superior product at competitive prices. Their products are clean, vacuum sealed ready for the freezer, and I have never seen any signs of freezer burn. If you order a three or four month supply freeze the vacuum sealed packs individually in water to ward off freezer burn which can occur even with vacuum sealed bags.

Be very careful with vacuum sealed. If they thaw, it sucks all the blood etc. out.

Earlier this month - the starter relay on my fridge went out. I got it repaired, but the rodents did thaw somewhat before the freezer was back in working order.

Now - they are a clumped mouse-cicle, but I can deal with that. Had they been vacuum sealed - they would be a mess.

Anyway - vacuum sealing is nice for long term storage, but it isn't 100% necessary that they be sealed that when they arrive. Ziplock bags are fine, and the way petco sells them are fine.

My little brother uses Petco exclusively for his kingsnake and his corn snake and it has never been an issue. They eat the petco rodents just fine and grow just fine.

Probably the ones you are talking about at Petsmart are not made by the company. Those are made by T-rex. I Don't shop at Petco though.=)

Do you have a herpetological society or club in your area? They often sell feeder mice and rats to members for wholesale prices (no shipping charge). I get mine from the Minnesota Herpetological Society.
