Nice Motley litter today! But ......

BASICALLYBOAS Jul 27, 2008 03:41 PM

....Hypo Super Motley!

We had a pretty nice litter of Motleys today. We were hoping for more from this litter, but really can't complain with the outcome. We bred our Hypo Motley Het Anery X Motley female and got 1 Super Motley, 8 Hypo Motleys, 5 Motleys and 3 Hypos all 50% Poss Het Anery. No Hypo Super Motleys and no normals in this litter! All the babies are super healthy and the Super looks and feels nice and strong. The parents are completely unrelated and we hope that helps out this little Super Motley a bit. With all the litters that have been had so far out there, I am starting to believe you can not make a living Hypo Super Motley. We will still give it another shot next year.

Super Poss Het Anery.

Thanks for looking!

Mike,

CONGRATS on an AWESOME litter. There are many things going on with the Hypo Motley that I have told a few people. I just didn't understand how or why it was doing this with the MOTLEY and not the hypo Jungle or the hypo Arabesque. Until last year and this year I have yet to confirm it with numbers.

A really whacky thing this year was breeding a Salmon Jungle Motley to another snake. It was weird to see where all the genes went. Again, NO NORMALS.

Dave and Tracy Barker has been helping me understand the genetics involved in this project, and a few others. We should have some clear answers in the next few weeks.

However, when you breed a HYPO Motley to a NORMAL, you will either get HYPOS, or Motleys, with NO normals.

The ONLY way a red devil has been produced is Hypo Motley to Hypo Motley. (stil yet to get a live one). Next year should answer more questions.

The only thing I can say with AFFIRMATIVE, is that when you breed a Hypo Motley to a NORMAL, you will get 1/2 Hypos, and 1/2 Motleys, but NO NORMALS.... Very weird... The only reason you are seing Salmon Motleys in that litter you had is because a different Motley parent was used, and that gene attached to the Hypo gene to make your Hypo Motlyes. Kindof confusing. Hopefully we will make it easy to understand with Daves help. lol

So the question remains. Is the ONLY way to get the Red Devil is by breeding HYPO motley to Hypo Motley? We'll hopefully soon find out. Also, the CA's work the SAME way... Hope this kindof helps. There are other examples in other snakes as to why this happens.

This is probably going to open up a big can of worms. lol

... awesome litter, but too bad no hypo super motleys. I do have some questions regarding Jeremy's comments. What do you mean Mike got hypo motleys because a different hypo motley parent was used? How many hypo motley X motley breedings have been done where there were several super motleys, but no hypo supers? Were the dead premie hypo super motleys Jeremy produced from a hypo motley X hypo motley breeding? Very interesting genetics going on here indeed!

Hi Shane,

I meant to say that there were Hypo Motleys because of the other NORMAL Motley in the mix. The Hypo gene from the Hypo Motley he used attached to the other Motley making Hypo Motleys. Hypo Motleys can't be produced with just a Hypo Motley. You need a Motley and a Hypo. In Mikes case, he used a Hypo Motley to a Motley. So, the Hypo gene from the Hypo Motley attached to the OTHER Motley used. That is why you see Hypo Motleys in the litter. I hope that makes sense.

When you use a Hypo Motley to a NORMAL female, you will get 1/2 Motleys, and 1/2 Hypos. NO NORMALS!!! No Hypo Motleys....

I have bred Hypo Motleys 7 times. In all 7 breeding not a single normal was produced, and the only time hypo Motleys were produced was when I used another NORMAL motley parent. I Only produced a Red Devil Once, PREMATURE, and the ONLY time I used Hypo Motley to Hypo Motley. I wish I knew more back a few years ago, but even then, you still don't know....

I knew I would mis speak on the subject, so I hope to clarify it soon.

So Hypo Motley to Hypo I have to know that outcome?
Plus you'd have to pair a Motley X A Sunglow just to get Hypo Motley Het Albino ?

So what will happen with a Sunglow Motley x Normal female and a Sunglow Motley x Albino??

Thanks

Are you saying that if you breed a hypo to a motley you will only get hypo's and motley's but no hypo motley's? Maybe it was the wording that threw me off but that it what it reads to me.

Jeremy Stone Jul 27, 2008 08:23 PM

Yes that is correct....

Hypo Motley to NORMAL will give you statistically 1/2 Hypos, and 1/2 Motleys. No normals in the litter. It is weird, but it is true....

The cool thing is you don't produce NORMALS. And wait till you see what happens when you use other genes in the mix. VERY COOL...

This may be dissapointing to some, but I find it a LOT better. It makes them more rare, and MUCH harder to be produced in numbers, and as many know now, it is very hard to beat an adult female 6 foot HYPO Motley. They are INCREDIBLE.......

Congrats really nice litter..no surprise..your a good boa breeder.
also not surprised no red devil(hypo super motley).. I would think you would need two hypo motleys to produce..the devil.
what I'm seeing is the value of the hypo motley to increase..
really don't give them away...thumbs up!!

Congrats again mike... Great info on the motley genetics.
