Preferred substrate?

blueharlequin Sep 03, 2003 05:39 PM

Anyone got any reccomendations on substrate? I'm currently using carefresh, which is what I use for my milksnakes, but my ribbon and garter seem to ingest chunks of it sometimes, particularly if a fish jumps out of the bowl and gets a bunch stuck all over itself, only to be eaten by the snake. Sometimes there's a bit (of the carefresh) left hanging out of the snake's mouth for a while until he gets it out or swallows it down. Should I be concerned about this? Carefresh is supposed to be safe if injested, right? I mean, the stuff is so pulped that it's gotta be easier to digest than fish scales.

Right now for my garters I am using this "Forest covver" stuff. Looks like potting soil to me with a light coloration to it. I am however going to change to normal old astro turf. That is what I use for my other snakes and it works out verry well.

I use paper towels or newspaper but aquarium gravel is also an option. If you want to stick with your present substrate you might consider a separate container for feeding them.
