Update: hypo brooks

KingOz Sep 03, 2003 05:41 PM

A few weeks ago I posted about my 6mt old female hypo brooks.
She has (or rather had) very loose stools since I got her when she was 3 mts old.

On the down side:

I tried to find a vet that would take a poop sample though mail as I cannot leave work as soon as she poops. And there are no vets that are closer than an hours drive that deal with reptiles.

On the up side:

I was feeding her pinks and a few people here said to feed her fuz or larger. So, I have been feeding her fuz, about 4 to 6 a week (2 or 3 2x a week). And I have been giving her a very small amount to vit and ca power on her mice every other feeding.

On the up and up side:

her poops are now normal. But I don't know if it was the fuz mice, vits, ca, or simply age, or a combo. But her poops are looking normal and are no longer puddles.

Glad to hear she is doing better. I bet you're happy you don't have to clean up puddles anymore. lol

I doubt the vitamins or calcium have anything to do with it. They aren't really necessary for snakes either. I'll bet the switch to fuzzies did it, since pinks have a higher fat content. If you can feed 4-6 in a feeding, you could probably try hopper mice too.

Good luck,
Andy

Actually what did it was the added roughage (the fur). but I do wonder how large this 6 month old is? That sounds like a lot of food for a small king and with pinkies that adds up to some undigested fat mixing with the scat making for slimy wet droppings....Frank

PS: My latest hypo brooks ate at that age 1-2 fuzzies every two weeks and grew like a weed. He is now a healthy 3.5' at two years.

It has been about a mt since I fed her a pink. She eats large fuzies and the problem is...she is long but she does not have alot of widith to her. I don't want to feed her anything that is wider than she is. I have used frozen rodent mice and their stock is some of the largest I have seen. I am thinking about switching to a FR breeder that has smaller mice so I can get her on to hoppers.

On a side note...my 3 year old black mex will not eat anything but fuzies. He used to eat weeners and adults, but lately he turns his nose up at them...only wants fuzies. He is about 3.5 to 4 feet.

But, I am just happy that my brook is doing well and the both of them are eating.

My Hypo and the majority of Fla Kings I've raised (and that number is large as I'm based in S,Fla) stayed slender till they got past the 2.5' mark. My male is Very husky now. I have noticed with the western blacks that mine also prefered smaller food... Frank
