I'm not singaling out PetCo here. But coming from someone who's been involved in the pet buisness for about 18 year & having work in retail shops, wholesale facilities, & currently as a breeder the issue with most pet stores, brokers, distributors, wholesalers, importers, or any other multi animal facility that deals in the sale of live animals is the high risk of cross contamination of diseases & parasites. When you see a cute little baby Leo in a pet store you don't know who or how many hands it's been through befor it ends up in the cage at the retail shop or how it was maintainer previously.
Honestly, the problems are not so much at the retail leval but generally speaking most retail stores get there Leos along with there farm bred, wild caught, & even other captive bred reptiles from one wholesaler for convenience. Who knows how well they were taken care of at the wholesaler. Who knows if they steralized there hands when they went from maintaining the wild caught Agama to maintining the Leos or if the cages were even sanatized between animals. The botom line at the wholesale leval is the bottom line. The faster you can turn an animal & the bigger the profit margin
Another issue with the demand for cheap Leos is some breeders have resorted to (for the record I DO NOT partake in this practice) pretty much selling & ship out hatchlings rite out of the egg. Then with the long journey with who knows how many stops along the way, the retail store may be the first opportunity the hatchlings have a chance for a meal. So already in there short lives, they've been under alot of stress which would leave them vulnerable to disease & parasites.
I'm not belittling of trying to bash anyone who purchases there Leos from PetCo. So you got your Leos for $17.00, good for you. But to say you don't think it hurt paying that price, well the only thing it didn't hurt was you pocket book.
I apologize for this long post, I tried keeping it short. But I just wanted to provide a little insite into were that baby Leo came from.
