Heat Pad or Heat Lamp

maiden_canada Sep 03, 2003 05:59 PM

im getting a ball python soon and i dont know if i should get a undertank heating pad or have a heat lamp sitting on top of the cage. a heat lamp seems more logical since it heats the air aswell, any opinions would be appreciated thanks

also what is the best kind of wood chips to use as substrate and also is paper towel or newspaper better?

I personally think a under the tank heater is best as a lamp on all the time will stress a ball python out. a ceramic heat emitter is a good choice to. I like using newspaper, easy to clean and cheap and the snakes enjoy hinding in it. pine is good just stay away from cedar.
good luck Eric

I would definitely use a UTH since BP's require belly heat to properly thermoregulate. I also use newspaper, I don't think htat any substrate is better, but newspaper is definitely easier and I think more sanitary to use than a wood substrate.
