trip to Brazil

herplover1978 Jul 29, 2008 03:40 AM

I will be taking a trip to Brazil next year and was wondering if anyone knew what typesof herps I could run into down there. I will be in the Sao Paulo and the Ribeirao Preto areas. Does anyone know of a good website or any books that I should reference or even bring with me?

There is a large reptile research center and exhibit in Sao Palo. My sister visited while she was down there, and she doesn't even like reptiles so much, but went so she could tell me about it. Has native herps. Might be worth looking into.

yeah, im planning on going there, but was kind of hoping to do a little field herping while I'm there, so I would like to know what the possibilities are that I could run into, hopefully not a fer de lance!

Bom Dia!! Pronounced Bon gia(Remember that, it's how they say hello)

Keep a stack of USA dollar bills, they love them there, and the local currency exchange rate changes daily!

Leave all your jewlery home, dress poor. it will reduce the chances of being mugged and robbed.

The locals call all snakes "Cobras" think nothing of it, they are not cobras!

If you can get a chance, go to Uba Tuba for a day, it's 4 hours from Sao Paulo heading toward Rio.

Your flight will most likely land in Rio first, then transfer to Sao Paulo. (Look for the giant Jesus statue out the window of the plane, it's spectacular!)

Anyhow, Uba Tuba is a small coastal village, very back woods and herps are everywhere you look.

Just beware, MANY are venomous.

Since my experience was with a Brazilian native, the names were all in Portuguese, so I am of little help there.

The animal species are almost all stunningly beautiful.
