How in the world do you get hybrids?

contemplate Sep 03, 2003 06:58 PM

i've seen the pics on this forum and bluetegu.com of the red/blue crosses. they seem to be quite beautiful to whomever has one. i was just wondering how they did that. i'm not a breeder, nor do i want to be, i'm just curious. do they just put reds and blues in together and see what happens? or do they use artificial insemination or other techniques? i know that the added diversity of the genes usually makes for healthy animals, but i dont know if that extends to hybrids. if two closely related subspecies reproduce, usually the offspring benefit from the diversity. just thinking...

I've been told it is very difficult. Only 2 breeders have produced red/blue crosses, the St Pierres (bluetegu.com) and Ryan Blakeley(Walters World of Pets). The St Pierres are very tight lipped about the process. Ryan Blakley says his were an
accident the first year. The second year he bred them again to show it wasn't a fluke. According to the St. Pierres blues and reds cycle at different times of the year so I don't have a good answer for you, how. If you are interested in a red/blue cross I have one that will be a year old Sept. 18. It's on consignment at a local petshop. Email me and I will get you the info. I have all the breeder and hatch info.
