After you put a monitor in good dirt deep enough youll never go back. A dirty monitor is happy. I use some from a creek bank that is reddish with some mixed in from the forest nearby. Ive added 50 lbs of sand to my albigs dirt (50lbs to hundreds of lbs of dirt). It does everything they need it to do and they recognize it as useful. Its attractive to them, thats what matters, and its worth the hard work sweating digging, straining carying etc. Its also very cheap, I payed for the sand (2.99 maybe) and the dirt was free.

Alot depends on what your keeping. Different soil for different monitors and what hold burrows well. Every different monitor I keep has a different substrate. Try different things and see what they like and then what works. My best diggers are what were suppose to be tree dwellers. Dont go for what you think looks nice, go for what works well for your monitor.
Put alot of effort into this it is important.
Good Luck, Robert
