yeah Ed it was about a 4 hour drive down there, everything is soo spread out here but it wasnt all that bad we had a great time.

it gets really warm here and if your not used to it the altitude can get to you if your not used to it, but as i am learning the southwest has some pretty amazing scenery

Beautiful shots---and beautiful "wifey!"

I love exploring caves!
I dragged my family into a spelunking adventure out in Colorado where a handful of us slid on our bellies (like a snake!) through a tight hole in the base of a wall into pitch darkness. Our guide was an expert who knew the huge, mazelike cavern like the back of her hand. (Otherwise we would have been doomed.) We all had headlamps so we could spend hours avoiding treacherous dropoffs (it would be a trick to get medical help in there) and wriggling through narrowing tunnels. I loved it! But my family said although it was very memorable they would not have gone if they'd known what they were in for (and they wouldn't do it again) *sigh*

Here's me avoiding a 30 foot pit (to the left). The floor slanted steeply toward the dropoff, as if it WANTED me to slide in. In fact, there was no flat floor anywhere in the cavern. Lots of incredible formations. I'll post another shot in the next post (since I'm not sure how to add multiple pictures) in this one.

Another shot of my family and the few others with us in a room of stalactites and stalagtites (our young female guide took the photo with my camera).

now thats what im talking about! very nice.

you cant call what we did spelunking at all seeing how there where handrails and paved paths lol.

i was mostly impressed with the size of it all we where down there for a good 3 hours plus we took the elevator back up lol i just love the "raw nature" of paved paths, handrail, and elevators... no but it was still awesome to see

It looks like the cave you visited was an absolutely gorgeous place--especially if it took 3 hours on paths to see all of it! I found the cave we visited so interesting that I ended up writing an article about it for The History Channel Magazine.

yeah that to me was the most impressive thing about it was the sheer size!! there where posts all over pointing out this and that, and we skipped over all of then and just went though. so the three hours it took us was quick compared to most... not only that but we had to stay on the paths and the paths took us through only a couple of the big rooms!! as big as that was i have a feeling we saw only a fraction of it. i know for a fact they dont let you near where the bats roost, plus there are other guided tours only areas. so like i said i was most impresses with the sheer size

The Caverns are amazing....bats cool too. I haven't been in a while, thanks for the reminder.

saagbay Jul 30, 2008 07:10 AM

ohh thats cool that you have been there too. do you live close by or was it just a trip?

i was disappointed with the bats (or lack there of) it was really dry donw there this year and no rain = no bugs to eat, and no bugs to eat = no bats....

well there where still alot of bats dont get me wrong but not near as many as i had expected. and from the sounds of it a fraction of what was there last year. some 36,00 compared to 8.6 million lol big difference
