2 eggs hatching

patsy1 Jul 30, 2008 02:38 AM

these little guys have been at it for days.
They are buried in about 3 inches of peat.
Today I peaked and the first one out has discarded its shell.
It still has a bit of egg stuff on its belly side.
It is so hard to leave them alone!
I have not been home before during a hatch.
Hatched enough chicks to know better than to "help"
any advice?
I guess it is time to construct a new hatchling home.
what about combining last years hatchling, 2 month oldies and the new 2?

That's great, Patsy!

I know how you feel, I have no patience either. I usually force myself to wait until they actually start pacing the rim of the container.

I would strongly recommend against mixing the new hatchlings with the older individuals. I've personally had very bad experiences in the past with mixing young turtles of different sizes. There were only a very few instances, but they were enough to make me immediately separate by size.

Almost every breeder I've met told me the same thing, not to mix my hatchling desert in with any of my adults or my juvi eastern. I also never mix hatchling and adult Russian tortoises, because I lost a hatchling that way. The only ones I mix no matter the age (not that I would put hatchlings or juvis with adults) are sulcatas. I bought about 2 dozen hatchling sulcatas last January and sold them for $100 each. By June, I sold all but the last two or three, and was given a 6-inch sulcata and threw it in the tank with them, and they did fine.

thanks for the advice - have been busy helping a friend.
Will separate them today.
They are still buried and it will give me a real excuse to take a look at them.
