Crappy litter

Jeff Clark Jul 30, 2008 12:08 PM

I had a litter of babies this morning. 2 live females, 11 stillborns and 7 slugs. All the stillborns were fullterm and were outside the membranes. I knew the mother was gravid though I did not expect this large a litter from her. She looked like she was going into labor last night. I have to guess that the slugs caused some difficulty during delivery and she broke the membranes and most of the litter drowned before she could deliver them. The two live babies may have been delivered before the rest of the litter. The mother of this litter is my yellow female. I got here as an imported adult in 1992 from Tom Crutchfield. This is her first litter since 1997 or thereabouts. Both live babies and all the stillborns are typical normal colors. The 2 live ones will go to the first people on my waiting list.

Surrounded by a bunch of BRB, some Ridleyi, a few Grey Banded Kings, Australian Cattle Dogs, a Belgian Malinois, assorted Mustelids and an incredibly tolerant male human.

Sorry to hear about all the stills Jeff. Thats disapointing. At least you got a couple of healthy little guys.
I hope you have better luck with your other females this year.

The slug hypothesis is quite probable. I am sorry to hear about all the stillborns. Depressing atuff sometimes.

Sorry about all the stillborns, that blows!!! Happy you got a couple of live ones out of the pile, sounds like it could have easily been a complete washout.
