Am I Doing Good?

beardabeard Jul 31, 2008 09:55 PM

I have 2 6 month old bearded dragons. They are in a 10 gallon tank with crushed walnuts as their bedding and a heat rock that they love laying on. They eat about 5 crickets a day and they have a big water dish for them to drink from. I was thinking about getting another friend for them too. Just wondering if my setup is a good one? Thanks

no offense to you but my answer is a big NO!!!

10 gallon tank for 2 6 month old dragons???
for a single bearded dragon they need a 4x2x2 cage. means 4 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet. well height wise can be smaller than 2 feet, 18 inches is minimum height.

get rid of the walnut shells. suitable substrate can be, washed and sifted childrens playsand from toys r us, soil/sand mix, reptile carpet, newspaper, sealed ceramic tile, or non stick shelf liner.

UVB lighting is very important. reptisun 10.0 UVB bulb running entire length of cage.

heat source as well, get rid of that heat rock you have. they need heat from above. spot light with a typical house bulb or flood light works well. get a temp gun to measure your temps. you want a basking spot temp of 100-110, ambient temps 85-90, and cool side of the cage in the low 70s.

read as many caresheets as you can find. do not get another dragon until you get these 2 in suitable housing.

oh and another thing...5 crickets a day??? at 6 months old the need crickets 2-3 times a day, as many as they can eat at a time. plus fresh greens as well. calcium and vitamin supplement dusted too. when they get a bit older, around a year, they need more greens than crickets.

Wow, have you read any care sheets for dragons?
I will let the more knowledgable people to help you out, but
WOW you need to do ALOT of research
go down the lists of posts here, and read em all, and you will see where your mistakes are.

Just wanted to add

My 4 month old dragon eats 5 crickets while I blink.
normally 20-30 EACH feeding, 2-3 times per day, work schedule dependant.
When I work, and she misses a third feeding, I double her green portion.
She eats twice her weight a day in food
6inch to 11" in 5-6weeks

Your setup is completely inappropriate for one hatchling much less two 6 month old dragons.

You didn't mention how big each dragon is but with only 5 crickets a day and apparently no light source, I don't think they are much bigger than 6"-8" which is really small for a 6 month old dragon (most are 14" or more by 6 months).

Beachdragon did already post a proper setup but if you don't have a large 4'x2' cage (floor space) available right now, two 30 gal long tanks will do (one per dragon) till both are 14" then the adult size tanks will be needed.

6 month old dragon should be getting two feedings of insects a day, dusted gut loaded crickets, butterworms or silkworms (medium size should be good) plus have access to fresh well chopped greens rich in calcium and low in phosphorus (such as collard greens, dandelion greens, etc.)

The crushed walnut is notorious in causing impaction and risk damaging the bowels as well (sharp edges). Get rid of it completely, its not worth anything nor useful for anything except maybe to put on ice to make it less slippery.

www.beautifuldragons.com has a great list of foods and which are best for dragons and how often as well as decent care sheet.
