Boxie in the News....................

vichris Aug 01, 2008 10:09 AM

And a beauty at that. In the artical they refer to the boxie as a female but it looks like a male to me. I'm not that familiar with EBT's but you all let me know what you think. Pretty cool story.

What a hilarious story, well written too, if a fellow reporter can say so. It does look like the turtle is a male though: hope the researcher didn't tell Paul Duggan it was a female! Very fun story, thanks for posting.

It does look like a male but there is still a chance it is a she

StephF Aug 01, 2008 11:36 AM

I think that the photo is just one of their 'stock' photos from the tracking project, rather than a photo of the turtle mentioned in the article. I've seen that photo before in connection with another story.

curtis9980 Aug 01, 2008 11:39 AM

I think you're right on that stock photo thing. I e-mailed the article's author and he responded with,

"Yup, told me everything anyone would ever want to know about the turtle, including it's an adult female ... But now your email has me wondering if he gave us the right photo!"

StephF Aug 01, 2008 12:57 PM

Well, the answer may have to wait until next week: I just tried calling Mr. Ferebee, and his voice mail said that he won't be back to work for a few days.

kensopher Aug 01, 2008 03:23 PM

Yeah, I've seen that photo before also. I couldn't forget a turtle that looks like that!!

vichris Aug 01, 2008 04:14 PM

I thought it was a pretty cool story too plus that is one great looking EBT. Glad you all enjoyed it as much as I did.

I read this story in the paper. I live in the D.C. area. Can boxies eat marijuana?

I would highly doubt it, plus it's on the toxic list.

mdterp Aug 02, 2008 10:36 AM

Yeah that's what I thought. I could just imagine a high box turtle turned over on his back.

Maybe the photo is of the female after all...that could be an explanation for the red eyes.

vichris Aug 02, 2008 04:15 PM

red eyes and red front legs were a pretty good indication of a male.

I know your just being cynical Stephf, but if that is a female she's absolutely the best looking female boxie of any ssp I've ever seen.

Not cynical...satirical.

Good one Steph! It took me a minute, and those are always the more funny jokes.

StephF Aug 02, 2008 09:26 PM

....like, how far is Rock Creek Park from here? Oh wow, was that like, lightening, man? Dude, look at those colors! They're so, like, colorful...wow...

curtis9980 Aug 02, 2008 09:51 PM

Steph, I knew you were a landscape designer, but I had no idea what kind of plants you designed your landscapes with until now...

StephF Aug 03, 2008 08:46 AM

hehehe...
Actually, when I first set up to head-start turtles I did let my neighbors know that all those lights in the spare room were for reptiles, and not something else. I knew that most of them knew me well enough, but we did have a new family on the street that might have wondered what was going on.

kensopher Aug 02, 2008 05:15 PM

Are those Deserts? They are beautiful, whichever subspecies. They look like the Southern Arizona form of Desert box turtle...truly gorgeous!

vichris Aug 02, 2008 08:29 PM

they are deserts..... but from Albuquerque New Mexico. The female was here in my backyard when we bought the house. The male belonged to my oldest son and he brought him over to live here with the female. Now we have a family of them.

See

Now that is satire
