need help

mardok Sep 03, 2003 09:20 PM

I'm interested in getting a snake for a pet though im not sure of what kind.
I dont want something that will get that long and i dont want something thats skinny. I want something thats reasonable docile maybe some kind of constrictor, as it will by my first snake. Although i would like to interact with it. If anyone has a breed they think fits please respond. I know little about different breeds and what i need for them so any information would help.

I suggest a rosy boa. They stay small, average 2-3 feet. Are quite heavy bodied. Very easy to handle.

Also, if you don't mind 6 fters, rainbow boas are beauts. Ball pythons are very docile and (my now corrected statement) can be anywhere from 3-6 ft, usually. You may want to check out kings, milks, and corns too before completely ruling them out. They come in a wide variety of colors and are typically nice, but still interactive. Also, they don't require as much in cage set up as boas. I once was only wanting a python or boa, but have reconsidered and will probably go with a king or milk instead. They are quite beautiful. Be sure to fully research the needs of each kind of snake and consider the all the costs before getting your heart set on one thing.

Good luck in your search! Let us know how it goes.

I'd recommend a ball python. It was my first snake purchase, and definately a good starter snake for me. Again, research and a reputable breeder are really important. People say Ball Pythons can be finicky eaters, but I have yet to see it. Maybe I'm lucky?

I agree. My first "big" snake was a ball. They don't need a relatively large cage (I have mine in a 40 gal.)are pretty easy to care for, inexpensive (norms, anyways), and usually docile. I have also heard they can be picky eaters, but mine too has yet to live up to this reputation .
