mealworms are changing.....got ? plus one about colours and breeding

RedQuake Sep 03, 2003 09:21 PM

Hi All

I just fed Boo, he was staring at me lol, and when i opened the mealworm container i saw 3 of them in the stage just before they become beetles, that alien stage hehehe I have also found one in his dish that he won't eat(when i put it in it was a worm).
My question is......can i still feed the others that are still mealWorms to Boo? He won't eat the aliens (i'd prefer to keep as many as i can to get my colony up and running again).
Will his digestive system kill the mealworms before they change into beetles?

Also i'm looking at buying some more geckos.... i am wondering: i'd like to eventually breed and get blizzard babies..so i need a blizzard male & female right? I'll just get normals het for bliz and patternless if i have a female patternless right?
Just wanted to clarify as i've been sitting here looking at the breeders site, trying to figure out what it is i'd really like hehehe.

Thanks for all the help

a male het for blizzard and patternless will give you some patternlesses and some hets. both double hets and normal hets. i think there will be some that arent het for anything, but im too lazy to think that hard. i'll check the genetics calc.....

a blizzard to a patternless you will get all normal looking geckos het for both traits or dbl het blizzard and patternles

if you breed a het blizzard to a patternless you will get all
normal looking geckos het for patternless 50 percent het for blizzard

if you breed a blizard het patternless male to a patternless female ALL offspring will either be patternless het blizzard or normals dbl het for both traits

if you breed a patternless het blizzard male to a patterbless female you should get all patternless animals 50% possible het for blizzard.

if you breed a blizzard male to a blizzard female you should get all blizzard offspting

breeding a het blizzard to a het blizzard will get i belive is a 1:16 chance of getting blizzards and all normal appearing offspring would be considered i think 66% possible hets for blizzards

i think this is the way it goes, i try not to think this hard this often

and yes your gecko will be fine eating the worms .they wont pupate in his tummy..... i hate the alliens (thats what i call em too) they creep me out how the squirm when ya touch em yuck.... hope you never see a super worm allien they are HUGE and soooo grosss i make my husband pick em up blah

actualy, het blizz x het blizz = 1:4 blizz, or any simple recessive.

WOW thats alot to digest lol

i guess i'll have to get pairs of the particular morphs i'd like then. one blizzard pair and one patternless pair.

its not that i want to sell offspring.... i'm looking to the future to what i eventually will produce. They have blizzards, patternless, reduced pattern and tremper albinos that i'm interested in. If i was to get one blizzard male and a female of each of the others combined with my normal, i could create alot of hets but no specific morph. Is that an Ok thing to do? Really when it comes to deciding what i'd like i'm actually just looking at two females and one more male (that one is going to be blizzard for sure ) Right now its all about which females to buy. To have them for my own pets and not getting into selling i'd like to have a variety of morphs. Breeding is still a very long ways off and more than anything i'd just like to hatch out healthy babies.

Ok so i'm totally nuts right, going into this much depth LOL
Any thoughts on how to decide......buy based on what pairs and babies i can produce or buy based on having gecko pets that show a variety of morphs regardless of what the babies will look like?
Thanks again

and remeber you can get reduced pattern or hypo het tremper, i have seen hypo het patternless and hypo or reduced pattern het blizzards. buy what you like, nothing wrong with producing hets at all, thats all how this started hehe. shoot i have quite a few hets and will be producing quite a few next year. buy what you like, breed what you like and have fun with it... thats really all that matters (other than the health of your geckos)... it takes a while to digest all of this info and get the het thing right and reimple recessive and blah blah blah.... i have had herps for about 5 years or so and it took me a while to understand it here is a good website hope it helps. it's a tad technical but take the time to read it carefully and it should help

alien stage *lol*

Are you asking if the mealworms will morph after Boo has ingested them? The answer is no, because he'll either chomp up the mealworms with his mouth, or the stomach acids will kill them.

Sometimes my leos are more apt to eat the "aliens" if you grab the end and make them wiggle. Hang on tight, you will drop them. But the movement seems to work better. Mine like the aliens better than the worms now. MMM...JUIC-Y!!
