Striped King question

Dave15run Aug 02, 2008 12:39 PM

I do not see many Striped Kingsnakes for sale. Is striping a recessive trait? Are they hard to breed. I have always enjoyed this variety. Is it unusual for the stripe to go all the way or almost all the length of the snake?

Striped phase kings are not hard to come by if you look in classifieds or go to shows.

Wait a few weeks and the classifieds here will be full of them. Many breeders have eggs just hatching now, usually they wait until they have shed and are feeding before they go up for sale.

No - it is not simple recessive, it seems to be poly allelic - and there seems to be different combination's that can cause it as stripe x stripe sometimes throw banded.

Full complete unbroken stripes are rare but they do pop up, even sometimes in the wild.

Full stripes are not really rare in the wild, but they are less common than broken stripes or jagged stripes. Here's one I found in 2006 in San Diego County. What's really uncommon is a banded snake with no broken bands.
