Ball Python Rack Confusion; thoughts?

jrphd Aug 02, 2008 04:33 PM

I'm thinking a 32 qt. rack would be sufficient for most adult ball pythons for general husbandry and breedng, no? A little too tight if I end up w/ a large female?

Anyhoo, I thought I knew which co. I was going to to go with but I'm now overwhelemed after looking at all their sites. Of the big players (we all know who they are), can I actually go wrong w/ any of them? I'm in a colder climate, so was thinking about the greater heating surface area provided by a sideways rack; not to mention I like the 15qt and 32qt. options. Please give me some thoughts. And if you feel more comfortable w/ back channel that would be fine.
Regards,
J

I have the 32 quart bins. They work out fine for me, though my collection is young, my oldest female being an 04 and has plenty of room.
I live in the north east. You sould keep in mind that it is hard for any rack to give off enough heat if your room temp is to low. You might need a supplimental space heater. Also with the sideways view, it does not give an adult animal much room to thermaregulate... especially if you need to run the tape/cable a bit hotter in order to keep the ambient temp warm enough.
I ended up making a separate snake room this year because my family was tired of being cooked all winter because of my hobby.

I just bought an AP sideways rack to try in the new room. It looks like it will work well, but I keep the whole room temp around 75-78.

Good luck!

Great to hear about the 32's being ok for most purposes. I guess I'm left with that temp. issue. I'd rather move out of the midwest before heating the house to snake room levels. And the wife doesn't believe in snake rooms. Go figure. Perhaps if I insulate the rack on the sides and back on an inside wall, etc. Do let me know how that AP works for you as that's what I'm looking at.

Just out of curiousity, what factors besides availability of tubs goes into a rack choice (i.e., Sterilite vs. Iris, vs Rubbermaid)? Do you or anyone reading know anything about AP's NEW DUAL SIDE RADIANT HEAT FOR RACKS?
Thanks again,
J

While 32 may be sufficient for most males and smaller females, once they pass the 2 kilogram mark I strongly think they need the extra space of a cb-70 tub. In fact, for some of the really huge females (over 4000 gms) even this may be a bit tight!

I have to say I have 3 -32 quart vision racks and one cb-70 rack and I do have some females pushing the 4000 gram mark and it seems to me that they do just fine in the 32 quart tubs as a matter of fact I have such a small room that when I sell off quite a few of my normal breeder females the cb-70 rack is going also. Hope this helps

Not to put too fine a point on it, but we have several 4000 gm females, and typically when in a comfortable coil they would cover more than 2/3 of the entire bottom area of a 32 qt tub. While I'm sure they would survive and feed in one, to me that just seems excessive....

I still say spring for the cb-70. It's the standard size used by most of the bigger breeders I've visited/seen.
