Did ya miss me??? I came home to....

rainbowsrus Aug 03, 2008 03:07 AM

I was away on a much needed vacation to my favorite play spot. Went for a week of camping, sun, water and lotsa barefoot water-skiing. Had a great time and have loads of pics, all still in my camera, will post up some later. Not many herps spotted, only a couple of juvi frogs and a lizard that was too fast to even get a pic of.

I came home to not one, not two but three decent litters of BRB babies. All three of them being tied (give or take) for the earliest litters of BRB's I've ever produced. Two look to be several days old and the third maybe a day or two. Since I'm unsure of the actual B-day I'm listing it as today. Will have to factor that into this years calculations on gestation times. Sorry, no pics yet (also still in the camera) but here's some of the stats....

Litter # one Wilma x Fred (oh yeah, they look gooooooood)

20 babies
1 still
5 slugs
Baby weights in grams
3-31
3-32
4-33
5-34
4-35
1-36
Total - 667 grams
Average - 33.4 grams

Due 08/17 (base on last years gestational temps) I bumped up the temps this year and was expecting shorter gestation. Actual was 117 days (again, probably a few days shorter since I found few day old babies) Her cage was the most messy from babies crawling all over the place.

Litter # two - Tink x Phoenix (another really good looking litter)

17 babies (not too shabby for a first time mom born in 2005)
2 slugs
Baby weights,
2-28
3-29
10-30
2-31
Total - 505
Average - 29.7

Due 08/19, Actual was 115(ish)

Litter # three Clover X Diablo, some good looking babies but a bittersweet litter.

20 - babies
13 - dead babies in water bowl (that really sucked unknown if they were viable or not)
1 - dead baby on cage floor
5 - slugs in water bowl

My largest count litter ever - 34 babies + 5 slugs for 39 ova.

Baby weights (on the small side most likely due to huge size of litter)

1-20
4-21
5-22
8-23
1-24
1-25

Total - 447
Average - 22.4

Due 08/21, Actual was 113(ish) I think this litter was actually born today or yesterday.

All in all, came home to 57 new mouths to feed, many of which have already gotten their first bite of my fingers

Will get some pics up when I can, have lots of catching up to do!!!!

Thanks Ike, I am a little sad I missed the actual births. The really cool thing is I had not even started the pacing and constant checking of cages and I already have 57 babies to play with. aka to get bit by

It's usually sad when a vacation's over, but in this case, coming home was probably the best part! Congratulations on all the new babies; can't wait to see pics!

Naughty is still naughty, but she's growing anyhow. I overnighted her with a live fuzzy in a small container the other night and she was interested in it, but it was still there in the morning. She doesnt seem to get the mouse=food thing, but she's still one of my favorites and I feel privileged to have her.

Thanks,

The more I think about it, the more I think they may have not been viable to start with. They still had the coiled up in egg look. Not the swam till exhausted look. That and the one other still that looked similar but not in the water bowl????

My "gravid" female Sable has started eating small meals at every feeding, and is going into a third shed!! I'm thinking she may not be gravid and is just getting chubby.

Maybe next year.

Hey Dave, Thanks!

Not sure but probably another 10 litters give or take. I bred 18 females but I believe several are not gravid.

Cranking the rodent colony up to full capacity. And I have a local rodent breeder I can get as many as I need from.

Is it time to start upping that rodent production yet? Sounds like you've got lots and lots of mouths to feed!

rainbowsrus Aug 06, 2008 06:27 PM

Definitely time!!! Caught me by surprise (a little) was not expecting them so soon. My "due dates were middle of August with an early window guesstimate (from warmer gestational temps) of 08/02 - 08/06. I found the babies on 08/02 and two of the litters were at least a couple of days old, possibly several days old. Third was only a day or so old.
