Frank,
...That really is an extreme looking snake. I have not been on the BP forum in forever. Is that an exceptional specimen compared to other pieds people are producing these days?

Yes that one is exceptional due to the mount white. I have seen ones that are all white with a nose patch but that is rare.

Thanks

im not a ball python expert or anything, ive never kept them in large quantities, but isnt it also rare to have a pied with very little white, i do know that they have completely different patterns, and one i saw with only a small dot right above the stomach happened to be the most expensive pied i saw at a show.

Mike,
..That just seems backwards to me. I would think the more extreme looking the more value.

FRoberts Aug 05, 2008 10:20 PM

Jeff,

The norm in value I noticed was the less white...the less value.

The interesting thing is that even a pied with a little dot of white could make a high white pied as an offspring. With this morph you also pay for how much white is present regardless of what babies it could throw.

I could see someone trying to ask for a lot of money for the opposite extreme, but the white in my opinion is what drives the desirability in this morph (for me anyway's)

An early way ($$$) into the project was to buy low white pieds.

Now they are pretty cheap when just a few years back they where 10k.

Nice Pied! I'm not real into the Ball Pythons, but I think I do want a Piebald someday. One that has lots of white just like that one. But for now I cannot justify laying doyn $2.5K for one of those!

Congrats!!

I've always thought BP's were okay, but that baby's absolutely stunning! It's the first one I've ever seen that I'd actually want to own---although I couldn't afford it!
(Plus, I'm still waiting for my beautiful little blood to arrive... I hope it's not a bad sign that she's been slow to eat out of the egg.)

I do not think it's a bad sign for your blood not to eat right away. I would imagine it wants something other then it is being offered and that is why it is taking longer then it's clutch mates.

Once it gets started they are little chow hounds.

I'm dying to get her and I've been starting to get anxious that she's taking so long to eat. The breeder says she looks and acts healthy (even though she hasn't eaten). Still, I've started to worry a bit about her. What do you think she might want to eat, if not mice?

What do you think she might want to eat, if not mice?

I am not sure.

But in captivity most pythons want rats, mice, or avian prey items.

Snakes are NEVER IMO stubborn feeders, it is US/WE that are stubborn in what we think they should eat.

Also I have read that it is not uncommon for blood pythons to go several months without excepting food.

This is probably based on the yolk they absorb giving them a HEAD START so they do not need to feed immediately for their survival in the wild.

Or it may be an artifact of the captive environment because we are not offering them their preferred food source.

Wild rats, mice, etc.. smell different from what we are offering when compared to what they are initially looking for.

Once they baby excepts a acceptable prey source it's all up hill from there.

Like I said...

Some snakes are suited by nature to feed later.

I have read this about neonatal blood pythons, so do not worry too much.

besides that we may also be giving the snake captive temps or other environmental conditions that make feeding for them less then optimal.

Jeff,

we all like money but they seem a bit excessive.

My first python was a retic at 11 , then an african rock at 13, then a ball at 15-16. Kinda backwards but they (the snakes) kept me out trouble, well that was my parents take on things, as long as I had my menagerie of reptiles and amphibians it seemed to keep me away from trouble.

Darn things still keep me in the house LOL!!!!!!!!!

But I am a multi species hobbyist that dabbles in breeding. For example I have bred a species of Boa, Python, and Colubrid this year. I have 48 babies from 3 snakes this year. (9 have not hatched yet). So 39 at the moment. Very fun hobby.
