Piebald Pattern Predictability?

jrphd Aug 03, 2008 03:00 PM

It is generally accepted that higher white Pied's are considered more desirable.

My question is, is it more likely that a high white pied will produce offspring with more white than say a lower white pied? And similarly, would the het offspring from a high white produce more white than a lower white's het? If so, is there more of a genetic contribution of the white in terms of outcome passedfrom mother vs. father?
Thanks,
Jon

The amount of white is completely random.

From talking to 98% of the breeders I totally agree, BUT, Alan Bosch is one of the more popular Pied breeders and I talked to him for 30 minutes or so in Daytona last year and he is convinced that the amount of white on a Pied is hereditary.

I agree, we are just starting to see pieds produced by alot of people. If you notice some of the pictures posted recently there are alot of clutches full of high white pieds. You don't really see a mixture of low white and high whites in a clutch.

I have always heard that the white is not related to the parents, but if you watch, it seems to me, the breeders with high white stock are the ones offering high white babies. At least it seems that way to me.

Could there be any environmental manipulations during incubation that could impact the amount of white?

I bred a pair of hets from Tom Carlton at Cypress Creek. My first clutch was 9 eggs consisting of 4 pieds. Of those 4 there were 2 that I would consider med-med/high white. The other two would consider med-low/med white. The next year, they produced 8 eggs with 4 more pieds. Of those, there were 2 med white and two low white. I don't think it has anything to do with genetics. Maybe someone has an incubation trick they're not revealing.
