Kingsnake not eating

bertcash Sep 03, 2003 11:14 PM

I am having problem with my california king snake eating. When I bought him he was eating 3 mice on a sitting. So far he has only eaten one. I saw on another post that they might stop eating around this time of year. This is my first kingsnake so I am a little lost. Should I keep trying to give him food, or should I wait a week until I try to feed him again. Also how long can he go without food. Oh and he is almost full grown and born on July 2002.

If he's almost full grown he can go a really long time without eating. Waiting a week between each attempt sounds about right to me. Just monitor the weight if you have the means.

There are a couple of questions you didn't answer. How big is this yearling? What part of the country are you from? I am assuming it is c/b. I have found it common for snakes from more northern climes to go off feed in the fall even though here in south Fla we really don't need to put them down for the winter. The other possibility is that he may be overfed and is living off the fat as it were. Kingsnakes (particularly chains in their various forms) are eating machines when healthy and obesity can be a prob. If he is a year old and almost full grown that is a real concern. I am not a fan of pumping for growth...Frank

A full grown yearling? Correct me if I'm wrong but that sounds a bit off to me. How long is he? How long have you had him? What are the temps? What size mice are you feeding him and how often? What kind of setup do you have him in?

My bad 2000. Just noticed that I entered the wrong birthdate. He is captive bred and was a breeder for one of the reptile stores in Jacksonville, Fl
