My First Halloween Hatchling - Graphic

waspinator421 Aug 06, 2008 12:59 PM

Well, this was the bad ending to a horrible breeding season. I manually hatched my last Pueblan Milksnake egg since it was long overdue. The baby was a beautiful Halloween that looked very much like it's daddy, but it was horribly deformed. Severely kinked all over, and an underdeveloped head. It was sort of alive when I pulled it from the egg, but it didn't live much longer.

This has just been a terrible year for me. I've had at least 100 eggs, but only 15 of them were fertile. Of the 15, I've had 2 fatally deformed, 3 kinked tails, and 8 non or extremely stubborn feeders. The remaining 2 were just fine from the start.

Wish me better luck for next year.

Thanks. I know it isn't the medium as I have used the same thing with the same amount of moisture to hatch reptile eggs for years. I'm guessing I had a temp spike or two in my incubator.

Hi Aubrey,

We hope you have a better round next year. I know this was brought up before, but are you sure the temps are good?

Thanks Joe. Yeah, I had my incubator controlled with a Helix, and there was a small fan inside to minimize hot spots. I must have had a temp spike or two during the Milk's incubation. I had a cluth of Cal Kings that all came out looking fine, just picky as heck.

I'm going to incubate at a few degrees lower next year and see what happens. I'd rather wait longer for eggs to hatch if it means healthier babies.

Do you live near a nuclear plant or a government experimental facility? this has been a tough year for me as well after losing my best this winter when my son's accidentally dislodged the heat system. half my eggs have been infertile and many others did not carry out full term. Next year has to be better!!!

Sorry to hear that you also had bad luck this year. Hopefully we'll be producing healthy babies left and right next season!

That sucks...
I had one of those hatch last year with only half a face. That's rough.
When I cut the egg open I thought it was just dead in the egg, till it started moving.
It ended up drowning in the water bowl a day later.
