sick anaconda plz help

greenanacondaje Sep 04, 2003 12:12 AM

I have a 3 foot green anaconda that i think has RI,
i dont know how he got it because i have a 150w light bulb over her, the huminity is 88-90 percent humid, she has a big water dish, and shes eating perfect, i did what most people told me to do by raising the temp. but still has gotten wurse over the last week, if i take it to the vet, will they be able to fix it?

p.s this isnt the first anaconda ive kept,

and i dont know if it matters but i live by the beach, could that have anything to do with it?

Mine has a RI too.

I believe my case is due to stress in general. Being at a herp show in a small tank with many siblings, kept in a hotel room over a weekend, shipped across the country and so on.

I have a good temp range 75 - 95, mine is eating fine and is even quite docile. I am trying to keep handling to a minimum and let it acclimate.

Yes a vet can definately help. A lot of times (unless your are really good at catching the early signs) a RI can get hold of an animal good and waiting is not advisable. I have to give mine a series of antibotic injections over a two week period. The vet gave the first one yesterday and I can see improvement already.

Your humidity sounds too high to me. I personally try to keep it humid but not wet. There are probably differing schools of thought on the matter but my oppinion is it should be in the neighborhood of 40% to 60%.

Get it to a vet and don't take chances. I think everyone will feel better that way.

` I sure would him to the vet. You didn't describe the symptoms, what are they? Is there lots of mucous in the mouth and nostrils, and if so, is it yellow, or green, or is it clear?
` I know lots of people use heat lamps, but I don't like them. Belly heat seems to me to be the safest. A cold floor can suck the heat right out of them, even with a heat lamp over them! The water should be warm, too. Some Anacondas will get into water that is too cool. I heat the whole bottom of the cage, from 75 to 90 degrees, humidity 70 to 90%, with the water over the warmest part of the floor. You should check the water temperature, as well as the floor temperature. It should be 78 to 85 degrees.
` Also, ( and don't count on this ) some of my Anacondas start to wheeze just before they finish shed. They don't do it every time. When this happens, there is no mucous. It's seems to be caused by the skin in, and around the nostrils, plugging them.
` When you suspect a respiratory infection, don't waste any time.

I have had a similiar problem with my dumerils boa. She is comming out of it now. I believe mine was due to too extreme conditions. It is summer time, if your room heat is up as well as that 150w bulb, it could be getting too hot in there. I read that this was possible from Pythons.net. I dont know if its possible with anacondas, but Id imagine so. I have a 4ftr myself, but never had any problems with him, other than he wouldnt eat for the first few weeks i had him. I am however confused on how to fix this problem. Normally you up the temps, but thats when its caused by low temps. Do you lower the temps in this situation, if thats even the case? Or would that make it worse? Who knows. Ive tried both with my dumerils and shes getting better, but now I dont know what i did correct. It seemed that dropping the temps and minimizing all stress possibilities helped. I cant be sure though. By taking him to the vet, they will probably give you injections of baytril, possibly amikacin, there are a few others, Ive even heard Tylan being used, which is actually for bovine or swine I believe.

hope I could help,
Chris
