BRB Light Above Tank

petie11o5 Aug 06, 2008 05:23 PM

During the day time I use a bulb which produces light and heat on my BRB tank. At night I turn the light off because my house stays at about 72-75 degrees F. Is it a problem for my baby BRB to have a light on its tank during the day? Thanks for any Responses!

And one more question. How do you get it to say how many snakes you have below your post. Example: 1.2 BRB < I dont know how to make that show up every time on ym posts. Thanks again for any help guys. I am new to this site and to keeping BRB's so have some patience with me lol.

....Welcome to the forum. These snakes are nocturnal and secretive and are probably stressed by bright light. If you use no external light on their cage and the room is not too bright the snake is much more likely to be out of hiding moving about the cage during daytime hours. Watch what your snake does to get an idea whether it likes warmer or cooler temperatures or more or less light. It will tell you what it wants. Rather than use a light to heat the cage use an undertank heating pad controlled with a proportional thermostat. You can use a simple dimmer rather than an expensive thermostat if the room temperature is stable. If your house stays a little warmer than 72 to 75 during the day you do not need any heat extra heat on the cage during the day.

I agree with all Jeff said, NONE of my BRB's has it's own light, just ambient room light from the window.

SCREECH.... (sound of old soap box being drug out)

From your post I'm envisioning a screen topped fishtank with a light bulb on top. IMO those are not the proper enclosure (as-is) for any BRB. They have two significant problems both of which can be band-aided and made to work..

1) The screen top lets all the humidity out.
Fix - cover most of the top with some sort of vapor barrier. Plastic, aluminum foil etc. Only a very small vent area is required. Play with it to get some condensation on the glass.

2) Glass tanks do not hold heat well. Glass being a good conductor of heat will wick all the heat out of the warmer enclosure into the cooler room. Forcing you to add more heat (also contributes to the tank drying out
fix - insulate three sides (and top if possible) to retain the heat.

Only trying to be helpful as I have seen MANY posts and talked to MANY people about why their BRB's are not doing well and that style of caging comes up in the discussion more often than not.

CLUNK (sound of old soap box being put back away)
