I do not wish to belittle your ambitions, but I would wait at least another ten years before attempting any sort of breeding project.

Your desire is admirable, but I have seen too many failures that cost the lives of the animals because the person who was attempting to breed was too young.

If something went wrong, and you needed to see the vet (Animal doctor) can you spend the money? sometimes it can cost hundreds of dollars to see the vet.

Recently a young lady I know from another forum who is 14 tried to breed her snake, and wound up killing all 27 babies because she did not know what to do.

Kind regards,
Wayne A. Harvey

I love seeing kids in this hobby! With forums like this one & care sheets easily found on the internet to help you out along the way, I feel you are never too young to join us all in this fun hobby.
I hope you have fun with your new project.

it would be best to study up a bit before jumping into it....does your dad have any breeding or reptile experience??? make sure you read up on it before jumping into it...it's a lot of fun if you know what you are doing....

ianrambell Aug 08, 2008 02:57 PM

He breed some garters when he was growing uo thats about it and the garter snake is a plains garter

ssssnakeluver Aug 08, 2008 03:25 PM

are you sure its a plains??? would love to see photos!

daneby Aug 08, 2008 06:48 PM

If keeping & breeding snakes is something you are interested in, then of corse reading up on it is recomended, but the best way to learn is hands on practice. You will learn alot along the way. I doubt that any snake breeders tought themselves how to keep & breed snakes before starting. We have all made mistakes with our snakes while teaching ourselves, especially when we were kids, so dont let anyone discourage you.
So go for it! Welcome to the hobby! & keep us posted on how your project works out.

I think you should breed her if you want to, but only if you promise to give me some of the babies...just kidding.
Experimenting is part of the learning and scientific process, and it NEVER hurts to educate yourself, but that doesn't always equal success.
Just enjoy your snake and have fun with it, and if you do decide to turn it into a breeding project, have fun learning along the way and best of luck.
Can't wait to see the pics, sounds like a really neat looking snake!
