"Free Range" Feeding Method

crodgers Aug 07, 2008 05:11 PM

Hello there,
I have an interesting (at least to me) scenario for you all concerning thayeri. So i wrangle everyone in their deli cups for the first feed after shed with frozen thawed and sadly/expectedly 1 out of 5 eats (1st clutch female). Contemplating the wrangling i decided to try feeding brained F/T pinkies 1 week later in their standard lil shoebox (pinkie placed on a solid surface). They just get so pissy being crammed into deli cups + they roam a lot in the shoebox. Next day all but the smallest ate! lucky or genius?... All are aberrant from 2 aberrant parents.

I always let me snakes find their food, unless i have a stubborn feeder, I give them alittle scent trail on the paper ( i change it out the day after feeding)i think it may make things more interesting for them, but that is just me

if you had tried the brained in the cup I'm betting you would've acheived similar results. I always fed brained or cut in half pinks in deli cups and had a very high success rate on first feedings. Glad it worked for you.

they all eat within seconds of hatching due to my wrangling skillz. Buy high, sell low. Wait, we are talking about snakes aren't we.

Must calm down......

I started doing this last year with all babies eating within the first 30 days of shedding. Some ate F/t first others would eat live first then switch over but all ate. I just fed them at night setting the pink on a small deli cup lid then turning the lights off until morning. This year has been a little slower but over half are eating now.
