Ya gotta love baby BRB's......

Got some feeders for all my new little ones and within minutes 52 of them had eaten. That's over 90% ate at first offering and BEFORE first shed!!! I left the feeders in with the remaining 5 (at least a couple had already killed them) to see if they ate when left alone. Not to worry, only small fuzzy/hopper mice without teeth.

Also noted something interesting about my new litters and dates.

Wilma's babies were found at POS + 117 days and I suspect they were several days old when found

Tink's babies were found at POS + 115 days old and while also look to be not just born I suspect were a little younger that Wilma's babies

Clover's babies were found at POS + 113 days old and look like maybe a day old if that.

Bottom line is my change to basking temps during gestation has decreased gestation time and with that limited sample look to be very similar. Of course I can;t say for sure exactly how long gestation was but looks like POS &#$# 112 days would fit what I see.

With that I have new revised due dates on a few females, those with positive dopler results...

Ann 08/13/2008
Daisey 08/15/2008
Molly 08/30/2008
Bullseye 08/30/2008
Betty 09/02/2008
Savannah 09/10/2008

Yeah, two more litters due next week including one very much anticipated one. Got me some pacing to do!!!!

I am starting to think my female is not gravid... but hatchling rack is ready just in case...

One thing I was worried about when I was gone for several days last month..was birthing happening while I was gone and all that gooy mess sitting there in the cage.. with the heat on one end, I just had visions of it quickly decomposing and killing offspring just due to bacteria issues from the mass of birthing material...or the babies being crushed by mom or both....

ever have this issue in the past?

Good job Dave. I usually feed all of may babies the evening that they are born. I like to start them on thawed rat pups.

PHLadypayne, I wouldn't worry too much about the goo if you're away. But it is VERY important to remove some cage furniture so things aren't crowded. Also, either remove the water dish or put a plastic fern in it so babies won't drown. Other than that, they'll be fine in there. The "afterbirth" might get nasty but I don't think it will hurt temporarily.

Well, I'm relatively certain Wilma's brood sat there for days and they were just fine. The cage was pretty rank though! I moved all them out and her as well, cleaned it and let it sit open for a day or two. She's back in it now.
