Female IJ breeder size

eden1968ie Aug 08, 2008 06:34 PM

What would be the ideal size / weight for a potential IJ female breeder. I've just acquired a nice 3 year old female IJ but I think she's a little on the small size, coming in at just over 4ft and 960 grams. She's been reared on mice up to now but since I've got her I've managed to get her on to rats.I think that this coming season may be a little too early for her but if I can keep her on the rats hopefully I can get her up to size for next year.

I have bred two females that werte both at 1000 grams and one laid 10 perfect eggs that all hatched. The other laid 11 eggs, with one infertile and all of those 10 hatched as well.
But in my experience, this is the lowest I would go. I am in no rush to make babies and often, waiting an extra year just makes more sense. But I am also partialy of the belief that if a female can lay eggs physically, she will. If she can't, she won't ovulate in the first place. From the natural selection point of view, what would be the point of a snake that is able to ovulate but not lay fertile/infertile eggs? It would be a great waste of energy for a young mature female that could use all the fat stores it can get in the wild.
