black milksnake

i want to build awood cage in my basment for a black milksnake.im thinking of putting a heating pad for when its really cold but do i put it directly on the wood.also it can get to 50 degrees how long can they take this if i forget the pad off.does anyone have an ideo of the dimensions of the cage should be,and lastly can i raise a baby in its full sized enclosure or will it be not secure and not eat.
