new hatchlings

Dave15run Aug 09, 2008 09:46 PM

I've been checking my eggs and found a surprise today. About half of the 21 eggs have hatched. I took pictures but can't figure out how to get them in a post. I posted pictures of the eggs two months ago but can't remember what I did. Sounds silly but why would I lie about that?
If I can figure this out I will try another post.

These are the first eggs I have ever hatched! I tried this 25 years ago with numerous sets of eggs. They all molded and I did not know anyone with experience. My wife said that she has seen me so excited about my snakes. I guess this 60 year old was 30 again.

I don't know too much but would guess they are normals and yes, they are dark. They seem to all be clones of each other. And I would add, YES it is FUN!!! I know I am gushing a bit but you can't imagine how long I have wanted to do this.

Well, it looks like I've got all I'm going to have. 17 snakes have emerged from their eggs (from a total of 21 eggs), three heads are peeking out of others, and one is slit but no head has emerged. How many think I should wait a day and then open the egg to see what is there? Can I assume that the snake is dead inside the slit egg? I know many of you guys and gals have experience that would give me the wisdom I need.

I am so excited that I need to check with others to see that I am thinking correctly. Should I open the slit eggs tomorrow?

DO NOT i repeat DO NOT force the babies from the eggs!!! they are absorbing the last of the yolks... they will come out in a few days....

As Doug said, I let that egg be and it hatched this morning. I was discarding eggs and found two more. One has a head sticking out this afternoon and one has yellow oozing out of a large crack in the egg. The total snakes in now up to 21 and all are healthy. I guess I will let the last egg sit for a few more days. I have wanted to incubate snake eggs for a long time and this is about as good as it gets.

I usually make the slits in the egg just a bit larger, or cut a little square in the egg so I can see the snake. If its been a couple days, its probably safe to cut the egg back a bit, without hurting the hatchling (if done properly)
