Ellie's newest pics and first chart

wftright Aug 10, 2008 03:29 PM

Ellie shed last Sunday, but I was getting ready to feed before I noticed. I only got pictures this weekend. I've also printed her first growth chart. She's a good eater and is comfortable around me. I'm thinking about moving her to a permanent cage, but she still seems comfortable where she is. She's now taking two pinkies per feeding. I'll move her to fuzzies soon, but there are still plenty of pinkies in the bag. I may go to three pinkies per feeding for a short time.

Three pinkies a feeding may be a good thing, In My Opinion. I have found that in the past a neonate will grow exceptional when fed many small meals at one feeding rather than one large meal. And....They seem more comfortable, pass feces quicker and are ready to feed again sooner....That is, if you are looking to grow er up quickly.
Raising them healthy with muscle is the key...not too fat with deposits and bulkiness.

You are doing a nice job keeping records.....

Great looking MSP by the way.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not really in a big hurry for her to reach breeding size. I like a larger animal because a larger animal is easier to handle, but I don't want to push her too much. I still have her in a very small container. I don't want to feed her too much until she's in a bigger space where she can get more exercise. Right now, I'm just happy that she eats consistently and is growing at a steady pace. If she'll continue to do that, I'll be happy.

Bill she sure does look good. She has a nice growth rate going. You're certainly taking good care of her.

Thanks, she's been a joy. She has a good disposition and seems happy. I'm going to upgrade her cage before too long. I want to give her more room to roam, but I'll do something to give her plenty of places to make things seem small and secure.

Very nice chart. Is that from one of those "husbandry software" programs or one that you created yourself?

Later,
jim.

Thanks, the chart is something I cooked up using an Excel spreadsheet. I've used Excel a bit over the years for work stuff, so I'm more comfortable with Excel than I would be with someone else's program. Some aspects of the chart are clearly leftovers from what I started for my ball pythons. For instance, I've never been able to find thayeri hatchling defecations consistently enough to include them. For my bigger snakes, I can generally find every stool within a day, so I note the date after I spot clean the cage. This information allows me to notice whether one of them has gone an unusually long period of time without defecating. I'd like to do this for the little thayeri, but their stools are just too small for me to notice every time. I need to develop more proficiency with the trendline stuff so that I can get average weight gain over specific periods of time. Anyway, fiddling with this stuff is fun, and I feel that I have a better grasp on how my animals are doing.
