question about cedar shavings

Abeercan01 Aug 10, 2008 10:01 PM

I got a quick question. I have a few garbage bags full of cedar shavings from a wood shop my grandpa has. This may sound dumb but would of be okay to use those cedar shavings for my breeder mice instead of the store bought stuff? I'm not sure if there is anything different about the store bought stuff.

No, cedar is highly toxic to small animals and then to the reptiles that will eat them.

I always wonder why pet stores still sell cedar shavings for animal bedding. It is well known to be toxic.

As for pine, the jury is still out, there is no definite information proving pine is toxic, but it is generally known that cedar is bad. Most avoid pine as well.
