Paradox BEL hatched!

JakeWallace Aug 11, 2008 12:11 PM

I just registered here a few days ago so I could participate in the BP and leopard gecko forums here. For my first post I'd like to share my paradox Blue-eyed leucistic that hatched out last night. I found her head peeking out yesterday in a clutch of 7 mojo x 'normal' eggs. I'm super stoked about her.

That has to be a great feeling getting that when you were hoping for, at best, 3-4 mojo's. That is sweet man.

I'm going to go cry know.

snakemansnakes Aug 11, 2008 12:22 PM

unfortunately he cannot repeat the breeding next year ....on fauna he mentioned the father passed away late in the breeding season after fathering multiple clutches!

jeffflanagan Aug 11, 2008 01:45 PM

The father is gone, but I'm going to try the mom with my lesser this year.

I really hope it's a simple combo of BEL-complex gene and something in the mother.

4ktung Aug 11, 2008 12:22 PM

Unbelievable!!! Holy cow, pace yourself! You can't just come with a paradox BEL right out of the gate. Where do you go from here?!

Ghireptiles Aug 11, 2008 12:28 PM

Really nice and I love paradox white snakes!!!

Thanks guys. I'm still trying to snap out of the amazement from when I first saw a purple nose poking out. It's all pretty exciting. Unfortuneately, it will be hard for me to match this post any time in the forseeable future, but I still sometimes have something worthwhile to add to a thread.

Wow - this is awesome.... Chimeras are cool, I wonder what it will prove out to be...

For a BEL to form two mojave embryos must have combined to form one partial BEL partial mojave embyro. How cool...

So, is anyone else wondering why we are seeing so many paradox balls this year? There have been a ton!!!

jeffflanagan Aug 11, 2008 03:40 PM

We don't know that it's a chimera, but the mom will be bred with a Lesser this year to try to determine what's going on. Dad is unfortunately deceased.

Mahlon Aug 11, 2008 05:01 PM

Maybe not a chimera, but as more and more of these "Paradox" animals are produced it really truly seems that they are, as I said 2 years ago, more than likely a "Chimera" or genetic "Mosaic".

Also something of note, in this case, Mojave X "Normal" / Normal, sometimes what happens is when duplication occurs, parts are "Deleted" (read not duplicated correctly) and in order to make up for the lack of genetic information, the gene that is "lost" is duplicated to make up for the lack on the side it is paired with... in this case it could possibly be that the Mojave allele was a part of one of these duplications, and voila you end up with a "Super" (Homozygous) form even though the trait was inherited from only one parent. Could also just be that you have a new allele in the white snake complex that is very subtle.

Irregardless, beautiful animal and congrats!

jyohe Aug 11, 2008 09:12 PM

I'd go with the genes read wrongly rather than a new white snake maker.......

......freaks are cool......

thought I had a paradox albino finally.........turned out it was a blushing albino stained from the blood clot it was living in..I guess a vein broke in the egg so it cut and stuck it's head out fast...the whole egg was filled with a black rotting blood clot.......cleaned it up like 10 times and got it's belly all back in order......shed and looks almost clean but still has some stain on skin ....blushed really nicely too.....

.....I like freaks.........

someday.......

chimeras are mixed animals not paradoxes (unexplained)....

like the lion headed,snake tailed,goat bodied , wait....I'm missing one......Greek mythology.......long time ago......LOL......30 years.......

......chimera in our hobby is like a burmese python x Indian x Ceylonese....or a ball x burm x retic....

.....have fun

It doesn't have to be different species. It can mean 2 distinct embryos blending in the womb....

jyohe Aug 12, 2008 07:31 AM

aaaaaaaaaah......the mutant morphing twin thing.......

I don't like that one.....

.....yep.......sorry......

The father was Jake's snake, and unfortunately died. I'm sure he can tell you who produced his Mojave.

The mother is mine, but due to some data-loss with a crashed PC, I'm not sure where she came from.

If Jen H. and Heather have photos of the snakes they sold me a little over a year ago, there's a 50% chance one of them will be able to ID the snake. Jake posted a picture on another popular ball python site.

She also may have come from any of several dealers, some not regulars, at my local animal expo.

It would be awesome of Jen or Heather recognize the snake and know what became of relatives, but I think it's a long-shot, and the snake may be a normal.

'06 male mojave from Chris Simone

I'm not sure of Jeff's female. I think he bought her last year as a normal adult. Maybe he'll reply if he has her background. Here is a picture from yesterday.

Here is a picture of the single lock between the pair. (All three of Jeff's females laid fertile clutches, all from only a single pairing with the mojave above).

Here is the female on her eggs.

I think the male mojave was an '05 animal, not '06. Sorry.
