After a trip to my local pet shop....

JackJebus Aug 11, 2008 05:02 PM

I saw a post on here and it made me remember the idiots some places get for "experts".

Jeff posted "Anybody can open a pet shop and become an instant expert and spew all the miss-information they want to."

Thing is this was at a huge petstore chain. The reptile expert informed me they had a "breeding pair" of TRUE redtails. I was shocked because I have never seen anything longer than maybe 18in at any one of these stores. So, I asked how big they were and he showed me a gap of about 24inches with his hands. Told me he knew they were a pair because the female was waiting in the water dish for the male to breed her and he was outside the dish guarding her so none of the other snakes came near.

Im glad I had more common sense than most folks going into that store. If I didnt then I would truely believe that boas only breed in water and the females are the only ones known to soak in a water dish and they only do it when ready to breed.

The same guy was telling me and another gentleman today that snakes dont attack when they are in the water!

On the same note. I am trying to fix this problem of misinformation the only way I know how. I just hope they need part time help around there lol

LOL That's a good one. I gotta remember that behavior so i know if I'm successful or not.

We got one out here with a breeding pair of "Duhnar" Boas. So I had to check this out. Yearling Dumerils. And this guy claims to be in the business since the dinosaurs.

Well that's one of the best I've ever heard about boa behavior! It makes me wonder where they get this stuff or if they make it up to impress the customers.

Thats funny! I heard a "reptile specialist", at I'm guessing the same huge pet store chain, telling a guy that the slits on the baby ball pythons bellys were from when they were at the farms in Africa the employees would cut them to mark the ones they would be shipping out. Its funny how some people cant just say "I dont know" when they are asked a question they dont know the answer to, and instead make up a bogus story. Sad thing is, I bet alot of people believe what they are being told by this pet stores "reptile specialists.
