Bred him to a female double het (albino & lavender) producing 1 lavender, 1 albino, 1 light colored baby and some possible double hets.

That's a nice clutch, Kerby!

Question for you: I bred that triple het male I got from you to what I bought as a possible het amel female. Well, she didn't prove out and all the babies are wild type possible hets. My question is, would a triple het be a visually different, like the male? Or would it just look normal?

Thanks!

Good morning Diego,

First off, all of the triple hets that I produced that year looked different than normal cal kings. A lot of my double het breedings look different, some don't...so there really is no way of looking at a cal king and seeing if it is a double het.

Although it sounds like your female is not het for albino, you can't rule it out so fast. I was breeding some het albino high white cal kings (same pair) for 6 years in a row. There were 2 years where they didn't produce any albinos with clutches of over 12 eggs each time. Some of those years they had more than 50% albinos. So it is possible that your female is still a het, another breeding year would help in deciding that. Or to increase your odds you could breed her to an albino, that would help in figuring out if she was het or not. I've always produced albinos from an albino x het albino, but like I've said I've bred proven het x het and not produced an albino before with cal kings.

A few years ago I got a pair of het albino splendidas from Don Shores. The first year I bred them ('06) I got 2 albinos, last year ('07) I got 3 albinos, this year ('08) I hatched 8 eggs and had NO ALBINOS. So it does happen.

Thanks Kerby! I was going to hold back 1 or 2 females and breed them back to him to see what happens. I was hoping that there might be some visual cues that would help me decide which to hold back, but then I sexed them and came up with 5.1!! Makes my decision pretty easy, really...

When I bred the Lavender male to the Blizzard female, I had ONLY one female, so I kept the 1.1 and sold oall the other males (you have one).

All your babies are possible hets (albino, lavender, hypermelanistic)

Very interesting! Did you pair up your triple hets this year?

That was one of many pairings that didn't take this year. I was in and out of the hospital a few times during breeding season, plus out of town a couple of times during breeding season. I do not leave my cal kings together and although my wife helps me out with egg laying when I am not home, she does not help me out with breeding. The last thing on my mind this year (when I was in the hospital) was snakes............so hopefully next year a lot of my "special projects" will actually breed....I guess they will just be a little bit bigger.

Another awesome clutch Kerby! Put me on the list for some of these if any are available as well as that clutch of Lavender x Ghost (Palomar) Cal Kings. Still drooling over those purples. We are working our "Purple Passions" and another project. These would fit in nicely to our plans. Feel free to email me directly at jcctt96@aol.com. Thanks.

Take care,
Jeff Port

That is him as a baby (3rd one pictured).

He had that "hypo" look, but didn't get the yellow and the weird off color until after a year.

To your knowledge, do both JR and JD strains of lavender produce some (or all) visible double het offspring with amel?

I think I remember vivid posting a picture of a hypoish looking double het that was BEB x (non BEB) lavender.

These Cal King pseudo-mendalin genetics are weird.
