Mexican bairdi hatching!

antelope Aug 12, 2008 09:30 AM

The bairdi started hatching on Sunday afternoon, 5 out of 12 out, 3 healthy, 2 died shortly after emerging. I looked at the egg content and noticed a very large portion of yolk still inside, I am wondering if the neonates that died could have gotten hung up crawling out and tore something. I was on my way home from west Texas and my wife Charlotte was frantically trying to revive the two. One was emaciated looking, the other was normal in appearance, none had any wounds that I could discover. They may have been suffocated by there hatch mates, as she said they were all piled up in a corner when she discovered them out. One individual fed right out of the egg, the other two are hiding under the paper towel with a pinkie in place. I'll get some pics up soon.

Congrats! What is a proper celebration ceremony for this?

Chips and salsa? Or a piñata?

p.s. Congrats, Todd. Mine hatched out about two weeks back. One died right after hatching too, so don't feel bad. (Happened last year too, so there seems to be something we may be lacking for incubation.)

Updated bad news...I was worrying about this clutch, as the ones that emerged made several (8or9) slits in the egg getting out, the remainders hadn't a single slit. I slit the eggs last night and watched for breating and movement. This afternoon, I went in to have a better look. 4 of the remaining 7 were dead in the egg, the other three were kinked and fused horribly, but alive. I will be attenuating the incubation process immediately, as I have another clutch on the way. I will set them up on very moist perlite but on top of an egg crate this time. I don't know whether it was my setup or the animals themselves, but I will take the heat for this one. Damn shame though, all my splendida that went full term came out perfect, and I don't see any kinks on the three that made it. They were laid one day apart, same setup. First time to have kinked animals, what a shame.
Good news is one ate right out of the egg, the other two are refusing, but haven't shed yet.
Live and learn, eh?

Congrats on the healthy ones, Todd! Sorry to hear about the two that did not make it, and I hope for the best for the rest of the clutch.
