I have many easterns ranging in colors from brown, orange, to red. I am working on a project with native PA snakes and one I purchased of questionable locality. The source of the snake told me its locality is from the Susquahana river valley in south central PA. but I am skeptical. I hope to produce zig zag or striped easterns in the Red phase. My male is brown and is zig zag approx 1/3 of his length. He has bred with my orange phase female successfully, and I have produced one offspring with approx 1/3 zig zag already. It may take several more years to prove this out. PA has recently changed the laws regulating reptiles and amphibians, and I was furtunate enough to successfully submit my animals for consideration as a legal color morph for breeding. All I need now is some good advice as this is my first attempt to breed for a specific (potential)trait. Advice from the best of you would be appreciated. I make my living as a flooring contractor, so this is only for the fun of it for me.

Beautiful! I have started working with easterns recently as well. The larger snake in the photo does still have a lot of red, but dark compared to the ones displayed here. The male albino is extremely red, but time will tell if he stays red.

There is another photo of the female here two posts down.

Hi Joe!,......rest assured, that albino will always stay nice and red,.....there's no other pigment color(melanin) to ifiltrate on the nice red color it has as in most other milks.

Glad to see it is doing well!,...looks nice and healthy man!

OHHH!! i want i want! nice albino.

I produced 10 offspring from the zig zag male and orange/red female this year. 9 of the offspring are normal like the female, but this one has 11 saddles that are connected creating a zig zag effect like the male. This may be a coincidence. It will take a few more years to know for sure.

Great looking easterns!I live within 200 yards of the sesquahanna near Williamsport,Lycoming county and these are typical of what I find here.
One of the "greenish" ones.A female.

A male red phase.

And some babys which always look red.

I've got some that started hatching yesterday, once all are out of the egg I'll post pics of them along with the adults.

I also have a clutch of red milks (syspila) due to hatch in about a week. Pics of the adult red milks below:

Just checked on the red/eastern eggs, looks like three out of five are going to hatch. One of them is out of the egg and is at least 7" long. This is my first time to hatch easterns, for some reason I expected the babies to be smaller? Not complaining though.. the larger the better. Once they are all out I'll post pics.

I'm supposed to be going. We are leaving out Wednesday morning early and staying until Monday.. I think. I have to double check with the other parties involved and make sure everything is still a go. I'll stop by and chat if I end up making it down.

Nice syspila, Dwight! Do they have locality data?

Here's one of my generic animals that will be bred into the Hypo group:

>>Nice syspila, Dwight! Do they have locality data?

Good luck with the hypo project Cole. The female syspila pictured is a wild caught animal from Calloway County, KY. The male is of unknown locale, got him on a trade. He looked similar to the female so I thought they would make a good pair.

I too have a couple of groups of easterns that tend to throw 'red' offspring. Though admittedly I'm finding it more consistent that the males exhibit sexual dimorphism and tend to be the redder examples in more northerly populations. Here are a trio of siblings just as a reference...

Dniles Aug 13, 2008 06:32 PM

those are great, Chris. I had a pair of NJ locale easterns once and the female was much nicer and redder than the male, but this was only one example I have to share and certainly nothing to draw any kind of conclusion from. In any event, neither one was as nice as your trio! Good stuff.
