Red Lights

rottenweiler9 Aug 12, 2008 01:52 PM

Will these be OK for a monitor if I left on 24/7. The reason I ask is because I keep my snakes downstairs on the basement and this is where the monitor will be. Since it gets cold down there in the winter I need to run the lights 24/7 and did not want to disrupt the snakes with reg light 24/7.

Thoughts?

I have a red light special i use on my blood python and leave it on all the time and it doesn't seem to bother anyone else around which is a few more snakes and my sav down below.

if you are just going for heat i don't see a problem with that.

Is that the only form of light youre providing? No UVA or UVB?

Correct that was what I was thinking. Is that wrong. I could be thinking of snakes not needing the addtional speacial lighting.

Thanks

you will need a reptisun 5.0 bulb as well for the stuff the monitor needs. its long. i think they call that a 'flourescent'

I have 43 monitors and none of them get uv of anykind. With proper husbanry is isnt nessasary. Thanks Ian

Well first off I just want to say I am certainly not an expert, just well researched. But snakes unlike lizards get all their needs from thier food. lizards need help from lights and proper Husbandry to thrive. In my experience you should have a incandescent (white)light basking area that contains UVA(basically visable light to your lizard, not hummans). Now with UVB we have a dilema. Some say that with proper nutrition and husbandry theres no need for the UVB, which certainly may be true. Others say its essential. A UVB or flourescent tube bulb can help to synthesis the vitamin D3 which fights MBD. Now, really its up to you. If your not the most experienced keeper, invest in UVB. If anything it will do no harm. However, stay away from UVB 10.0 bulbs for the time being. Theres been some problems with those. For a savannah maybe use an 8.0 rated bulb. As for your red incandescent bulb, those are usually used only to maintain overnight temps above 70 -75 degrees. Sorry for the length.
