Incubation temps., shell irregularities, and hatchling gender

nategodin May 23, 2003 06:51 PM

Hi,
I posted a question a few weeks ago about whether my '02 Eastern might be female, because it had an extra scute on its carapace. I asked the breeder about his incubation temps, and here's what he had to say...the temperature varied between 80 and 88, average 85. Is that warm enough to cause shell deformities? Is my turtle more likely to be female?

Thanks,
Nate

i incubated my box turtle eggs in a plastic bowl with a top and kept them in the garage. It may have gotten into the high 80's and none of them lived past 2 days of pipping. So all i have to say is I'm getting an incubator this year!!

if that info is accurate, I'd guess you have a female. At least it is more likely that you have a female than a male.
