SalS Sep 04, 2003 11:37 AM

I'm doing some research on the White-lipped python and have found at least 3 different scientific names. What is the current one?

thanks!

Hi there,

the current taxonomic name is Leiopython albertisii.

Hoser 2000 introduced two subspecies and one full species as follows:
Leiopython albertisii albertisii Peters & Doria 1878
Leiopython albertisii barkeri Hoser 2000(Mussau island specimens)
Leiopython albertisii bennetti Hoser 2000 (Wau specimens)
Leiopython hoserae Hoser 2000 (southern or black race)

Indeed these names are valid under the rules of the ICZN code but I prefer not to use them as Hoser gives only poor diagnosis and does not provide real evidence. (Ray, I might be ignorant, but that's how it works, doesn't it).

Cheers,
Wulf

It's me again,

by the way, what kind of research are you doing on that species?
Would perhaps be of interest for me, too.

Cheers,
Wulf
