Brbs with other snakes

brick1 Aug 12, 2008 07:57 PM

Just a query, i have added bci, balls and superdwarf retics to my collection lately. Now i will probably just keep the brbs, nothing else. Everything has been quarintined (its 4am i cant spell) as much as possible in a small apartment like i have. But i was wondering if there are any communicable diseaes that i have to be careful about, ie something one carries, that could affect the others etc etc. I dont mean like mites etc, i mean something that a boa can carry that can kill a python and vice versa

cheers

I was just reading an article this morning about IBDV (Inclusion Body Disease Virus.) I've always seen it referred to as just IBD. According to the article, it is highly contagious to any/all boids. Actually the article states it's hightly contagious to "other animals", but I've asked about quarantining on other forums, and was told it only affects boids. (Not really relevant to you, since you have only boids.) Some owners recommendt quarantining new snakes for 3-6 months in a separate room from the established snakes!

Thanks,
Ed

i totally understand about quarintining, and as said, i have taken as many precautions as possible, and im quite happy with things so far. But as my collection grows, there are just some things i want to start to take more care about. Also i guess separate rooms are great for the big boys, but no so easily done with small operations, and girlfriends in the same house

IBD is a strain of virus related to AIDS... it can only be spread by fluid exchange, therefore, it is not space sometimes as much as having a good barrier system and good hygiene practices.

I recently moved into our new house (yay) but it needs a lot of work (boo), so the snake room isn't done and we are actually living in the front half of our house, so I understand the space issue all too well.

What I do is put only siblings in my divided cages and unrelated snakes get their own cage even after quarantine (I have repti-racks, they are like boaphiles). Then I try to put my new arrivals in a separate part of the room that I keep my snakes in.

Many of you know Rose by now. She actually gets her own room because she's a sicky (well, it's my bedroom, so she shares it with me, but it really is her room!)

The vast majority of bacterial and viral infections are only spread by fluid exchange or direct contact, only very few are airborne. And if you get an airborne, I doubt even separate rooms would help you!! Just do your best and Good Luck!

Hey, I can relate, all I'm allowed is a closet for my snakes.

I wasn't necessarily recommending separate rooms, that seems a little extreme to me. But I can understand wanting to err on the side of safety (assuming an extra room is available) if one has a large collection of boids.

Thanks,
Ed
