zig zag eastern milksnakes

captainjack Aug 12, 2008 10:05 PM

I have been keeping easterns for many years now, and have had great success with them. That being said I have no experience breeding for morphs or any genetic traits. I have been lucky enough to collect some great specimens from my home state of PA. I have an adult male that has a zig zag pattern that runs approx 1/3 of his body length. My goal is to see if I can produce fully zig zag animals. He has failed to breed for me for the past 3 years except for this year. He finally produced 10 offspring with my orange/red phase PA female. One of the offspring has 11 saddles connected creating a zig zag effect. Is this coincidence or possible genetics? To complicate the matter I have another beautiful male Red eastern of questionable locality and ultimately I want to get his color into the project if the zig zag proves to be genetically reproducable. I have enjoyed reading many of your posts over the years and value the collective experience of this forum. I look forward to your advice and tips for success.

Jack

That zigzag pattern is a heritable trait, I have seen it occur in certain populations, and I believe a similar animal is what Carl Bartlett used to produce the striped coastals from New Jersey. If you are into eastern milk morphs take a look what I am working with and comment on the post in the milk forum. Thanks.
