defrosting rabbits

leeann Sep 04, 2003 12:11 PM

What is the best way to defrost and warm a 4 pound frozen feeder rabbit? I have just changed the feeding of my 10 foot burmese from 3 jumbo rats to a medium rabbit. The rabbit has been a a bowl of water in the frig for about 12 hours and it is beginning to thaw. But how do I warm it? It seems that if I soak it in warm water long enough to warm the insides that the outsides will start to cook. Or is it not important to have it warmed all the way through? Replies would be greatly appreciated.

I would think you would thaw it like any other rodent. Just put it in warm water and it'll thaw out in time. With such a large animal I would change the water a ew times to keep it from getting too cold.
About cooking the insides and outside that shouldn't ever happen. You are not supposed to use boiling water, just warm.

I use a 5 gallon bucket, place the rabbit in the bucket, fill the bucket with hot water, cover with lid and let sit until thawed.
Does not need to be in the frig during thawing process.
May need to replace the water once before completely thawed and the rabbit should be completely thawed prior to feeding it to your animal, so as not to cause your snakes body temp to drop.
