sweet potatoe...........

reiko Sep 04, 2003 12:13 PM

lil baby Daigh Da'Bug loves his greens, his collards are his favorite green, zucchini is his favorite squash (he will eat every last bit i give him) but i offered him a tad of sweet potato and he just loves it, its not something i usually feed, wondering if anyone knows the nutritional value of this? i imagine a bit here and there wont hurt him but just curious he eats whatever i put in his face, good thing i grow everything myself or i think i would be out on the street with the way these guys eat

Sweet potato (boiled, without skin)
Ca:P 1:1.2
protein 1.3%
fat 1.4 %
fiber 2.5%
water 80%

Looks like a great veggie to feed to Daigh da'Bug. Glad she's such a great eater! I'm curious, do you feed the potato cooked or uncooked? I'm going to try feeding sweet potato to my beardies, I just wanted to know if you cooked it or not. :D

i feed it raw, i just peel the skin off (i dont feed the skin, just seems a little thick maybe too hard for baby daigh) with a potato peeler and then use the potato peeler to shred some of it right on top of the salad, they all love it, but Daigh especially

thanks a bunch for the info!
what about yams? i forget if you have those on your site,,wanna give those a try, ill have to take a peek and see if you have them listed

Nutrition information per serving of one medium sweet potato:

Carbohydrate 31.56 g
Dietary Fiber 3.9 g
Sodium 16.9 mg
Potassium 265.2 mg
Calcium 28.6 mg
Folate 18.2 mcg
Vitamin C 29.51 mg
Vitamin A 26081.9 IU

We use sweet potato as a standard in diet when we get in poor doers or ill dragons. It helps to boost the immune system, contain virtually no fat, is low in sodium, high in antioxidant and the fiber in them help promote a good digestive tract. Also the potassium in them help an animal maintain a good electrolyte in the cells. Something a ill dragon needs..... and they do love them

Only thing you do have to watch is it is high in Vitamin A, so keeping other diet food diverse is important.

Looks like yams have more phosphorus 1:3.2 and twice the fiber. And I forgot to mention that the sweet potatoes are high in vitamin A and oxalates, just like carrots. But since you're only feeding a few shredded on top, I wouldn't worry. I'm going to give yams a try and see how they like 'em.

they sound great, ill include them in the weekly variety, i always like to shred something on top, always sparks interest, not that Daigh needs it, something on top or not he cleans the plate including all his pellets, i think hes trying to tell me that he wants to grow up to be a repcal rep, maybe a cover boy

My dragons just love the colors. Sweet potato, and butternut squash are two of the most common I use. I throw a few slices on top of their greens and they just love them. Great to add some color and variety and is a bit healthy too. I think it's a good choice, and a plus is it stays fresh for a long time after buying.
