Were these bred with permission? I was under the impression that the originator of the current Bothrops caribbaus was very selective with their breeding and was loaning them out to just a handful of places under the conditions that they were not bred without permission and placement arranged for the offspring beforehand.

Amazing animals, Terry. Keep us posted on their progress.

LOL - I would guess your impression is similar to an assumption..

Cheers!

Very nice, Terry

Are carribeus more of an arboreal species like insularis or are they more terrestrial like the other species of bothrops?

taphillip Aug 18, 2008 10:43 AM

Our exhibit allows for the adults to go up to 6 feet in the branches. I see the male sitting about 4ft or so from the ground on a very regular basis. The female only occasionally but more so than other Bothrops sp.

Interestingly, the babies would shed immediately following breaking the amniotic sac. Within an hour or so they would sit in perches from 10 inches to 6 feet up in the exhibit. It made the hunt for all the babies rather interesting lol...
Cheers,
Terry

Yep, all of the baby Bothrops I have had shed right after birth, or within 1 hr of birth.

Interesting Randal,

Our moojeni and atrox usually take 3-5 days before shedding...

Interesting note anyhow...

Cheers!

nah, Terry, you just haven't been paying attention or wittnessed the actual birth of the snakes. Baby Bothrops will go through at least 3 sheds ( mostly 2) while feeding off the embryo, BEFORE actually getting hungry and start searching for food on their own.

taphillip Aug 19, 2008 12:11 AM

ME? Not pay attention? Never...

LOL Randal! That is an entire possibility!

Are you at Daytona this week?

I'll be there again.

Hope to see ya

Terry, naw, I can't go, I just got back from Louisiana and have to go back to the zoo. Maybe next year, and careful where you slip those 5 dollar bills! LOL!

Very cool Terry...

Would not be fun to take a nip in the face from one of thoses little buggers...bad enough having to look for the big one on the forest floor.
