Eastern ribbon snake

gregz May 23, 2003 07:04 PM

I caught this snake today and I'm pretty sure it is a eastern ribbon but it has an orange belly and the side stripes are only in row 3 and maybe just a touch of row 4 the lip scales are not at all pure white the pic I have is not great but if someone could help me out with a positive id I would be forever greatful!

to tell us where you caught the snake. It makes IDing a little easier. I've never found an eastern ribbon snake, but have found a few subspecies of the western ribbon snake. It almost looks like you have a garter snake, but it is hard to tell from the picture...

Get a closeup shot of the head. It might not even be Thamnophis, but it's hard to tell from your picture.

from what i know, there are Butler's, Plains and Eastern Garters in Ohio. if it is a Garter, looks to me like you've got a Butler's.

It's not a ribbon; the dorsal stripe would be much more prominent. I'd say either Eastern Garter or Butler's Garter. (Do lined snakes range into Ohio?) MichaelB
