M. Baroni or M. Madagascariensis?

Mothi Sep 04, 2003 01:55 PM

I have the Mantella book by Marc Staniszewski, but still confused as to which my mantellas are...

I am leaning more towards M Baroni, but want some opinions. I looked at the color of their legs underneath them, but can't tell if they are considered red or orange. They kinda seem orange red... One of my mantellas is alot smaller than the other one. Does this mean 2 different types of mantellas or that I have a male and female, or a female and a juvie?

I have 1 picture with both mantellas in it and 3 of each one seperate. I hope the quality of the image is good enough that someone might be able to tell me what I have. Thanks.

The pictures are on this page: http://www.geocities.com/zippidde/mantellas.html

Thanks.

Um, i think baroni and madagascariensis are the same thing. (Formerly madagascariensis, now Baroni). Where did you buy it from? ...id say the one on the right is still a juvi, and if the one on the left doesnt call, than its a female.

I bought them from Reptile Depot advertised as beautiful mantella. But that is certainly not correct... I am trying to find out what type of mantella they are and if they are even the same type.

According to the book I have, M. Baroni and M. Madagascariensis are two different types.

I dunno about the latin name of your frogs- but i do know that they're common name are 'Painted Mantellas'-- there's actuall some for sale in the classifieds right now for 25 each. The smaller one is a juvi, and he's got some time before he's old enough to sex.

that's my 2 cents

It's neither baroni or madagascarensis if you have those blushing mantellas. Frank Williams and I had talked about it being a hybrid. It's also called "red form" of M. expectata. Eithyer way, I wouldn't support it.

Please explain. What is my frogs? I looked at pictures of M. expectata and my frogs look nothing like it. If mine are hybrids, what are they hybrids of?
