Strophurus, There should be more breeders.

GeckosByBrad Sep 04, 2003 02:22 PM

Hi,
If any of ya'll have owned any Species of Strophurus, I am sure you will agree that they are one of the coolest geckos out there. I have owned many genus'/species' and these by far are my farvorite. I like them better than Nephrurus amyae, Rhacodactylus leachianus, and most other species.
The only thing is, hardley anyone is working with these geckos. They are rare, and still many people dont have a clue about this genus.
If ya'll get a chance, grab them up! They are very easy to keep. And are interesting geckos. If any of ya'll are working with them, which species? I am working with S. ciliaris aberrans, S. c. ciliaris, S. williamsi(reticulated), and S. intermedius. I got all of mine from a Jerry Peebles, great guy , with some great geckos. I should have a site on kingsnake soon and ya'll can see pictures on there.

Strophurus williamsi are an awsome species. All are kept the same, besides elderi. S. williamsi come in two forms, spotted and reticulated. I hope you get some. Trust me, one species leads to another with these guys. Where are you located at? You can always have some shippied to you. They are worth every penny.

I've got a sub-adult male Strophurus intermedius, that I got earlier this year. I just love the little devil. He's got cool eyes and I've only caught glimpses of the inside of his mouth which is blue. Oh and I had to experiment with the defensive tail squirting, I got a little to come out. By far some of the most fascinating geckos out there. I hope to get a female to pair with him by the end of the year. Well keep in touch and we'll see how things go.

What are the care details for S. ciliaris ciliaris?
I have been interested for a while but I can't find much info on them.......

Gekko Vol. 1-from the GGA site has an excellent article on the keeping of S. ciliaris, by Phil Tremper. You can also check out his site and Dragon's Den site.

Strophurus are are kept the same. So what I am saying about S. c. ciliaris is the same as any other species in care. I keep mine all on paper towel. i lightley mist once in the morning and once at night. I feed 3-4 crix every other night. They dont need large cages, a 5 gall high is fine for an adult animal. A 10 on its side for a pair. Strophurus like vines, I use the small bendable vines and wedge them all on the top portion of the cage. They are always seen out for the most part. On the 5 gall tanks I use 2 6ft shop lights that extend across my cages, so the whole cage is lit(Ihave 9 cages to the 6ft double shop lights.) When you keep them in pairs I would give the a 10 watt halogen spot also, unless your room is warm enough and the have the tubes to get under. I heavily dust their food. They are as easy as a crested gecko, and a lot more rewarding. They are mellow and beautiful geckos!
