Just a stupid snake

HerpZillA Aug 15, 2008 05:57 PM

I only have 1 female corn this year. A possible BR outcross, that was bred from my old bloodred female and a friends male possible diffused. There just were no males.

So, I have this P outcross with my new killer male. I never saw any action. But lately she looked gravid. I dig out my last portion of peralite and vermiculite mixture, to make a laying area.

She buried the eggs in the aspen and took a dump in the peralite and vermiculite medium. I'm guessing 9 eggs, very sunken, but still soft.

My last medium was some sphagnum moss. I don't like it for hatching, but it was all I had, at hand.

I placed the eggs in the moss, and lightly covered. My idea is to let air in, but a bit heavy on the humidity for a day to get the eggs to rebound?

maybe with some luck I'll salvage a few.

Yes Tom,....many snakes aren't exactly known for their brilliant thinking ability..LOL! Proof of this is when they constrict a prey item in their own coils, and search every square inch of the cage to find it for fifteen minutes..hahaha!

I'm guessing unless the eggs were VERY badly indented from being there many days you will get them to rebound back to full diameter,.....but just watch the amount they are allowed to absorb. That could be just as bad.

Good luck with getting them up and going!

Yea, I've seen weird things from herps too. We had a 3-4' cal king that bit his own tail and constricted it. For a long time!
We told the people that bought it, PLEASE keep it in a larger cage with lots of bedding. But it was hilarious! lol

OK, a picture of teh eggs today. I had back surgery yesterday and did not look. I'm pretty sure i looked wednesday?

I know the sphagnum is pretty wet. Its a bit wetter then I planned, but I did want it a bit extra moist. The eggs are not "embedded" they lie on the moss and a light covering. Again, my idea is space for air but heavy humidity for today. Tomorrow I will cut down. UNLESS, you guys/gals think other wise. This in not my area. I have lots of experience in things, but many area I don't and will say so.

Yes, that looks pretty wet,....I don't think it needs to be quite so wet though, but maybe it just "looks" sopping wet from the flash!

Yes, I would DEFINITELY drape some very moist(but not wet) loosely arranged spaghnum over the entire clutch,...that way they can get direct moisture humidity AND air,...they are worse than I figured they might be.

good luck!,.....You will need all you can get!(sorry)..LOL!

Sad thing is the eggs are nice size, shells look good, other than shrunken in. Maybe I can get a couple.. But with my luck they will all be males lol.

Well, thanks for the prayers lol

keep them poist for a day then redo them so they don't drown...

..

as for the female's mindset....again...she laid them in mulch, that smelled good....and didn't lay them in 2 varieties of rock, toasted and popped into looking like soil......that didn't smell good to her....(so she crapped in it to make it smell better).....

snakes

use moss for laying medium

use perlite and or vermiculite for hatching medium

alot of people use vermiculite for the female to lay in...this usually turns out with the female digging around in it and getting all covered in the shiny mess.......eeeew.....and perlite is course and can scratch the female up pretty well.......(babies too...((as per Zuchowski))when hatching in perlite ,get the hatchlings put prior to them shedding or they will get scuffed and or cut /scratched up from the perlite)....it is a rock....

peat (moss) can also be used......(for laying)

hatching in moss can be hard to keep moisture at the level needed ...alot of pics I see in here are really too wet.....

...good luck
